Review: Photograph - Brian Freeman

Review: Photograph - Brian Freeman - October 2025 There’s something quietly haunting about Photograph, the kind of story that settles into your bones and lingers long after you’ve turned the final page. As I curled up with this one, I felt like I was stepping into a storm - one that begins softly but builds into something deeply emotional and utterly consuming. At the heart of the novel is Shannon Wells, a private investigator with a compassionate streak for helping women who feel like they’ve run out of options. I instantly warmed to Shannon. She’s not just solving cases ,she’s carrying people’s burdens, and that gives her character a grounded, human quality that makes you root for her from the very beginning. The mystery surrounding Faith Selby pulled me in straight away. A woman asking, “Find out who I really am” is such a simple yet loaded request, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. When Faith turns up dead, leaving behind nothing but a photograph of a little girl s...

Review: The Girl in the Photo - Heidi Amsinck

Review: The Girl in the Photo - Book #2 Jensen Thriller - Heidi Amsinck - July 2022 This thriller drew me in with the title, the book starts with a handful of elderly murders. They all seem random except, for one thing, each crime scene has a photograph of a young girl. The same girl but different scenes. Meanwhile, Jensen is back living in Copenhagen and determined to make a career as a freelance journalist, even if it means running into Detective Henrik - someone who she had this weird relationship with. It felt like they had an affair but some moments felt like all he did was save her from a serial killer. As the book goes on, Henrik and Jensen both discover that the three victims came into money back in 1996. The identity of the girl is finally revealed and how each person played their part. I hadn't read a Nordic Noir for a while and so this was a refreshing read. The only downside was that it was a bit slow-paced and the ending frustrated me as I felt that we were let down w...

Review: The Dollhouse - Sara Ennis - June 2021  Not in the mood to do much but read, I decided after watching a movie called Red Notice which by the way was a fun action-comedy flick with Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and The Rock to sit out in the sun with my kindle. I scrolled through and came to The Dollhouse which had been on my mind for a couple of days.  This book starts with a story about a photograph which during the book, there are several photoshoot recreations and stories of the original photographs. The book then jumps to Sunshine leaving her kids for a couple of days - 14-year-old twins Bud and Angel. The two end up getting abducted by a woman named Jennifer and delivered to a place called "The Dollhouse". The twins met Olivia who was also abducted and the three of them are now Alfred's dolls. They are subjected to torture and his playthings, especially Bud and Angel. The book is told in three viewpoints - we have the view of the Dollhouse and what happens with...
