 Chapter Excerpt : Hunter's Prey : Immortalis #2

Hot blood coursed through my veins as I gulped down the gushing fountain of my victim’s neck.
He won’t be hurting women anymore. I thought to myself as I swallowed each hot mouthful of blood. How quickly the hunter becomes the prey.
Using the power of my mind, I sent him feelings: waves of pain and grief for the murder he had committed. The human mind was easy to control, and I called upon all the skill I possessed to make him suffer.
Murderers and those who dealt in crime and abuse were my prey. It was because of them, those vile individuals, that I was a vampire. Memories of my own near-death experience and echoes of past wounds fueled me.
As a vampire, I had power, the power to stop bad people from doing awful, evil things. Fate has a way of working things out, and it gave my bloodlust a purpose. If I was to be this creature, I would ensure that my feeding stopped the unnecessary deaths of innocents.
I drained him slowly and painfully, savoring the honey-sweet elixir of his blood. Keeping him alert enough to feel every draw against his neck, I gnawed at the wound with my sharp teeth and dug my nails into his flesh. I wanted him to feel everything. I wouldn’t let him go unconscious. He needed to know and understand the torment he had inflicted on others. I only wished I had found him, sooner before he ended the life of the poor woman lying at our feet. The fearful look in her dead eyes was a painful reminder of the men who had attacked me.
This man would pay with his dying breath.
My victim moaned pitifully. He beat against my back, struggling to free himself. I tightened my grip, locking his body in my deadly embrace.
He was going nowhere.
The heat from his blood coursed through my veins, strengthening me, warming me, giving me his life-energy. I savored this feeling: the tingling rush, the ecstasy, that filled my being.
Just as the wave of pleasure crested, his heart slowed to an erratic thump, and the gushing fountain became a trickle. I knew he wouldn’t last much longer. His blood pressure was dropping.
I lifted my head and gazed into his fear-filled eyes. “It’s no fun when you’re on the receiving end, is it?” I smiled at him, licking the last few drops of his blood from my fangs.
My head swam with energy—his energy. I felt powerful, strong, and just.
The wretched man was like putty—just a lump of mush—in my hands. Weakly, he exhaled a final dying breath. The light of life in his eyes extinguished. His head lolled and then flopped backward.
I listened carefully. His heart thumped once, twice, and then … nothing.
I bit my tongue and swirled a mix of my saliva and blood across the wound on his neck, ensuring it would close. The evidence of my feeding would be gone by the time anyone found him.
A strange prickling sensation tickled the back of my neck. The hair on my arms stood straight on end. I had come to know this unmistakable feeling quite well since I’d been turned. Another vampire was close. I dropped my victim unceremoniously on top of the woman he’d just killed and turned around to scan the area. Though the street was dark, my vampire eyes had no problem spotting another pair of pale eyes staring back at me from the shadows.
A footstep broke the silence. Still young, I’d had limited dealings with other vampires. Not all were friendly. I hoped the one watching me would be.
“I know you’re out there,” I called to the darkness. “Show yourself.”
Raspy laughter crawled out of the shadow. “Are you sure you want me to do that, Alyssa?”
In the space of a second, realization hit me. My eyes went wide and my heart slammed into my chest. Oh shit. Santino!
Another footstep echoed around me as he moved into the light.
A trademark of the vampire kind, his blue-gray eyes seemed to glow as he looked at me. A wild mane of salt-and-pepper hair jutted out in all directions on top of his head. Deep-creased wrinkles and scars covered an aged face that had seen many battles. His lips pulled back into a predatory smile, revealing a perfect set of sharp white fangs.I was running before I could even comprehend the thought of it. I needed to get away. Fast.
As the sun began its ascent into the sky, I settled down, safely at home, preparing for sleep. But it wouldn’t come peacefully. Somewhere, trapped between the dreaming and waking world, I felt his presence. The cold, prickling sensation. It crawled up my spine and raised the hairs on the back of my neck.
Not again. I tried desperately to rouse myself. I knew what would come next.
As if on cue, those cold, emotionless, blue-gray eyes appeared above me. They locked on me with contempt. Santino.
I’d dreamt of him for weeks after our last battle. I thought I had finally escaped the daymares that had haunted me, but now they were back. I knew every scar on that fearsome face, though I wished I didn’t. I’d met him only once before, and against the odds, I’d lived to talk about it. That was something only a handful could claim. Santino was not one to leave anyone alive once he’d set his sights on them. I willed myself to wake. But, just as before, the dream continued. His piecing gaze bore into my skull. I was motionless; my body barely held the strength to gasp for air. Laid out like an offering, I was an easy target, ready to be slaughtered. If I could have screamed I would have, but I was mute, destined to see the events unfold as they had when I had lived through them.Santino’s mouth formed a sinister smile. The tips of his fangs poked out from behind his lips, but I knew it was not his teeth I should fear.Stuck again in this nightmare, I tried in vain to will myself awake. Paralysis had me frozen in place, helpless. Slowly, he reached out, grabbing my head, balling up a fistful of my hair. Strands snapped under his grip, pinching and pulling away from my scalp. I needed to break free from his grasp. I needed to somehow get out of this dream. Fear gripped me. He rocked my head from one side to the other, inspecting me. Would this finally be the time? Would he finally kill me? His eyes focused on my neck. Wake up, damn it! “Not going to be much of a fight, are you?” he said, pulling out his knife—a large thick blade with jagged edges. Blood from his last kill still coated it.
He made the sign of the cross and mumbled a prayer under his breath.I willed my muscles to listen. Move, I yelled in my head. Move, damn it. Wake up! My heart beat wildly, thundering in my ears as Santino’s eyes opened and focused on me once more. Disgust flashed across his face, as if I were a mangy animal and it was beneath him to have to put me down. His lips again formed that sinister sneer. I shuddered. His gaze was like ice, sending a shiver slithering down my spine to the churning pit of my stomach. He exhaled a growling breath that echoed in the room as he placed the cold, heavy blade to my neck. No!I awoke with a start, shooting upright in bed. My heart pounded, and my chest heaved with each sharp breath.
Disorientation fogged my vision. I struggled to compose myself and come back into reality. It’s over, he’s gone. If this had been merely a bad dream, the sight of my room and Lysander sleeping next to me would have been immediate comforts, but this wasn’t just a dream. Those events were real. Re-living my first run in with Santino seemed to be my curse. The memories haunted me, playing out every detail of that bloody night, ending just before Santino attempted to finish me off. He’d nearly destroyed my entire clan that night. I shuddered at the thought of him. Santino was well known as the Acta Sanctorum’s best hunter—a vampire who made a career of killing his own kind. He and his team of hunters had tracked down and destroyed the largest coven of vampires known to exist. He killed their leader, Kallisto, right before my eyes. I was supposed to have been next on his hit list. If it hadn’t been for Lysander and the aid of our friends in the Peregrinus clan, I would have died. I was lucky to have gotten away, and Lysander had almost paid for my escape with his life. Everyone assumed Santino either dead or too weak after that battle to continue his hunt.
Deep down, I felt differently.

Excerpt From "Shades Of Twilight" -

Can you spot the famous movie reference ?

The lights came back on in the theater, and still half the people hadn't left yet. The first portion got up and left the moment the credits came up, but the rest sat in their seats and talked about everything they'd just watched. A few of the last people leaving let their eyes linger on Michael as they walked out, but most didn't even seem to notice him any longer. I guess they were more wrapped up in their new world of vampires and werewolves. I couldn't blame them, really. Bella's world looked all romantic and fun. Somehow even with a horde of vampires trying to kill her, the movie seemed to make it a cool thing. I realized that, had I been Bella and that was my life, it wouldn't seem so cool anymore. At the moment, though, it did. Her romanticized life seemed preferable to mine, and yet a part of me knew I wouldn't leave mine right now even if it were possible.

I looked over at Michael to see him sitting there staring at me. I wondered what he was thinking, if he thought I was his Bella, or was he just amused that I had the need to escape into fantasy. I noticed a kernel of popcorn stuck on his shoulder, then one in his hair, and couldn't help wonder how they got there."Are we done yet?" He asked with a bit of hope in his eyes. "Or are we going to go get another ticket and watch it again?"He looked so adorable right now, just sitting there with popcorn in his hair. I wasn't sure what it was or why he so appealed to me right then, but without thinking I found myself pressing my lips against his silky soft ones. His lips warmed to the touch of mine, as we kissed.

About the Author : Martin Sharlow

Martin Sharlow was always a storyteller. In his youth he used to play roleplaying games and usually he was the game master. That allowed him to create and modify stories and then tell them to his captive audience in the form of a game. Because of this and the many fantasy books he read, Martin went the next step and started writing fantasy novels.

Recently, however, Martin changed genres to vampire romance as he got bitten by the vampire bug. This happened after picking up one of the latest novels and finding himself hooked on it. Today Martin has written two vampire romance novels, and is in the process of writing many more.
Martin currently lives in Vancouver, WA with two of his three children, who help to keep him grounded in reality. You can visit Martin Sharlow at http://www.wix.com/targoun/martin

VBT# Darrell King - Part 2

Today's VBT# is Part 2 of the Darrell King "Mo Dirty" Tour as part of the "Pump Up Your Book" Virtual Tours. Youv'e read the review, now we get inside the head of Urban Fiction author Darrell King with an Interview.

Mo' Dirty

Interview With the Author : Darrell King :

1) Tell us about your book Mo’ Dirty?

“Mo' Dirty: Still Stuntin'” is a thrilling sequel to my 2005 novel "Dirty South" it pretty continues on with the underworld drug dealing adventures of the infamous crime family of New Orleans, the Lake clan.

2) Are you a fan of the crime/thriller Genre and if so what are some of the books that you have enjoyed in this genre besides your own?

I'm a huge fan of African American crime/thriller genre better known as “Urban” or “Street” literature. I enjoy almost anything by K'wan, and Nikki Turner. I also really like novels from the pioneers of the genre, Donald Goines, and James Beckford AKA ”Iceberg Slim".

3) What gives you the innovation to write a particular genre?

Gangsta rap really sets the mood for me. Especially hits from Tupac Shakur, and The Notorious BIG. Now that's innovation for you!

4) Has your characters or writing been inspired by friends/ family?

There are several characters that I’ve based loosely on individuals I’ve known as an adolescent. As a youth i lived in a pretty rough neighborhood, so many of the activities i observed were rather unsavory to say the least.

5) Did you experience writers block? If so, what did you do to get rid of it ?
I believe that there is not a writer alive today, as well as the great wordsmiths of days gone past who didn't have to deal with the annoyance of writer's block. I simply step away from the manuscript for a while and focus on something other than writing. Usually afterwards when i return to writing my mind's totally refreshed & refocused.

6) What are you working on now?

I'm currently working on the third installment in the “Dirty South” series.

7) What is your favorite scene in your book?

I would have to say the standoff between Whiskey Battle the gangsta and Mickey O' Malley the police chief... intense!

8) Had you previously written anything?

Yes. Mackdaddy: Legacy of a Gangsta (Publishamerica,2004), Dirty South (Triple Crown Publications, 2005), How Do You Want It: The story of Southeast Trina (Urban Books, 2007), Great novels all of them!

9) Were there any scenes that were cut in the editing process you wish had made it into the book?

Generally I’ve pretty much have had nearly 90% of my original plots left intact within my novels.

10) Can you give us one fun fact we might not know about Mo'Dirty ? Something about the story itself or the writing process?

Mo' Dirty features a great deal of information about the Gullah culture of the low country regions of both South Carolina & Georgia.

11) How did you get into writing? Did you always want to become a writer?

I was very attracted to comic books and the bigger than life characters, & colorful, vividly exciting storylines within their pages as a child. i would duplicate in my own youthful way the panel style & action packed scenes with my own versions of comicdom's popular heroes and villains, viola! an author was born!

12) If you were stranded on a desert island, what are three material things you couldn't be without?

my lady, my kids, & my computer.

13) What are you reading now?

"ePublish: self~publish fast and profitably for Kindle, CreateSpace, iPhone and Print on Demand" by Steve Weber

14) Which author has inspired you most and why?

K'wan Foye. Not only is he tremendous author whose been a powerful force in African American literature in general and Urban literature in particular whose work i both enjoyed and gained inspiration from, but he's also been a really close friend of mine as well.

15) What advice would you give aspiring authors?

Study your craft, never give up, and most importantly have fun & enjoy the ride that is your writing career!

16) As a Quotes Person I always like to ask To finish off, do you have a quote or poem that has stuck with you over the years and what is the story behind it?

”Carpe Diem” ( Seize the day, or moment), i heard it uttered on a movie once, and I’ve since adopted the saying and live by it every single day. Love, Peace & Hairgrease yall! I'm out!

VBT# Darrell King - "Mo Dirty - Still Stuntin"

Today's VBT # is Part 1/2 of Darrell King's tour with Pump Up Your Book - www.pumpupyourbook.com
Youv'e read the Interview with Darrell King, now check out my review of his book "Mo Dirty-still Stuntin'".

Mo' Dirty

Review: Mo Dirty- still stuntin - Darrell King- December 2010

Are you a fan of Urban Fiction especially the African-American life of Urban Fiction or Street Lit as it's sometimes called? If so, then you will definitely enjoy Darrell King's book "Mo Dirty" as the style of language is written in a way that as I have only ever seen African-Americans on TV though I guess the New Zealand equivalent are our Maoris , that it is how I can imagine them talking with their slang and shortened sentences . It is not only the style that comes across but the author has written it into the text e.g "goin' ".
In Mo Dirty, we are first introduced to a former ex-con turned pastor who has been killed by a hired assassin named Peter "Whiskey" Battle. He is a 24yr old enforcer for one of the most dangerous gangs in the city "The Bad Boyz II Syndicate" which when I read that made me think of the Will Smith and Martin Lawerence movie "Bad Boyz". Soon Peter is offered a job of a lifetime and one that will make him wealthy beyond his dreams, the underworld are combining the forces of officers gone astray to help eliminate their enemy - Chief Officer O'Mally. Soon Peter finds himself in a whole lotta danger as he finds himself involved in an affair that will bring the death of a loved one. Did he cause the death or is he the vicitm in the game ?
Find out more in "Mo Dirty". Your typical African-American Urban Lit.

Lisa Klein's tale of Cate of the Lost Colony is not just a work of amazing fiction but she has written it in a way that the truth of what really happened in the fate of the Roanoke colonists - Cate of the Lost Colony is a novel that weaves both fiction and non-fiction together in an amazing tale.

Literary Musings : Record Those Thoughts

Record Those Thoughts- An Intro To Diary Writing

As the New Year dawns on and hits 1st January, we all set those yearly resolutions that we aim to keep throughout the year. You know the ones, I will exercise once a week, I will not drink alcohol, and I will quit smoking. For me I always plan each year to start a diary and continue throughout the year, unfortunately like many others after the first week or so, I get bored and the resolution fades out of my head till next year. This year however I am determined to put my resolution dreams into action and keep a diary. So, as daylight hits on January 1st 20011, isn't it time for me and you to finally religiously commit to our resolutions.

When It comes to what to put into a diary, It can be anything from your deepest thoughts to those crushes you have "the I Heart (Insert name) ", to those wild nights of one-night stand passions and inner feelings, it can even include those boring everyday notes reminding you that the electrician is coming today or that horrible dentist appointment you've been dreading is coming up. For me, looking at diaries I've kept over the years, I have recorded inspirational quotes e.g Kirsten Dunst–The real secret to total gorgeousness is to believe in yourself, have self-confidence and try to be secure in your decision and thoughts. Other things I have written is Poems that attract my attention and my own quotes and random thoughts.

If you need that boost of Inspiration when writing your diary then a couple of Famous diary keepers to read and be inspired include:

Real-Life Diaries – Anne Frank, Andy Warhol, Virginia Woolf and Dorothy Parker
Anne Frank's Tales from the Secret AnnexFiction – Bridget Jones by Helen Fielding, Adrian Mole Diaries by Sue Townsend and depending on what mood you're in there's Diary of a Mad Bride by Laura Wolf and Diary of a Demented Housewife by Sue Kaufman.

If a Diary's not your thing, there is an alternative: Blogging. Blogging is the online internet version of a Diary; it is becoming more and more fashionable. For those who aren't afraid for the public to read their intimate thoughts and daily ramblings, then this is definitely the way for you to go as it is becoming increasingly popular. Blogging provides an open forum to the world where you can express your feelings on everything and anything from things as simple as that awful shopkeeper who said you were bigger than you were to that awesome meal you had. It is also offers the opportunity for readers to write back and share their similar experiences with the world.

There are over 20 million different blogs and bloggers on the net. Anyone can do it, it's as simple as 1, 2, 3 and there are lots of sites that offer free blogging and who knows your blog maybe snatched up by a publishing company e.g the notorious call-girl Belle Du Jour started documenting her life on a blog and was later made into a book and then a TV Programme starring Billie Piper and another in UK was titled "Girl with a One-Track Mind". With the internet who knows what will happen, what started as a New Year's Resolution could end up a million dollar deal and changing your life.

Blogging Sites include www.blogger.com , www.blogdrive.com and www.blogspot.com (That's who I'm with – www.thephantomparagrapher.blogspot.com ), www.diarist.net and www.livejournal.com .

If you want to check out a few blogs before starting, Google offers a section titled "Blogs of Note" which includes everything from Blogs on Cab Drivers to Dieting Agonies.

Review: Passport Through Darkness - Kimberly L. Smith

We read about missionaries and people going out into the hearts of countries that are dangerous and yet, no matter what happens as long as they have god's faith they are forever strong and nothing can crush them down and destroy their faith and joy in the mission and of course God.

Passport through Darkness: A True Story of Danger and Second Chances

Review: Passport Through Darkness : Kimberly L.Smith - January 2011

Ever wondered what goes on in the minds of some of these missionaries who risk their lives for God's work , how dangerous that their lives can become at a flick of a switch. For one women Kimberly Smith her life was about to change drastically and take a path that she had never dreamed or crossed her mind before. Kimberly Smith was just like you and me and all the rest of the Godly and Christian women out there. She was an average everyday American Church attendee , a wife and a mother. Believing that she could achieve more with her life for God's work- she dared , yes you read it right . She dared to ask God to share his dreams of her life with her. By doing this, Kimberly was opened up to a brand new life and way of living. She decided to open up a foundation called "Make Way Partners" which is dedicated to ending human trafficking -an offense that is highly common in American and third world countries. When travelling , Kimberly and her family had their eyes and hearts opened to the atrocity and mess that human trafficking is about and it was in this moment that she truly discovered that she was the one that could make a change and put a stop to it. So over the journey of her book "Passport to Darkness" Kimberly talks about her journey of pain so terrifying and fearful and hurting to the gut-wrenching moments we feel in life. Her book "Passport to Darkness" gives us the view that no matter what happens when we put our lives on the line and give our all to God, he will not only provide but also care for us in a love that nobody can ever experience the full capacity without putting everything you have in him. Included in Passport to Darkness is also a guide to following our own heart's desire and discovering a way to live the purpose -filled life that God has planned for us all and it is only when you are following God's way that you will know what it's really like to bask in God's pleasure and love.  A heartwrenching and touching tale about how one woman gave up her safe and risk-free life in order to follow God's destiny that he had awating for her.
