VBT# Inventing Mr. Darcy - Susanna Craig

Image
Review: Inventing Mr. Darcy - Susanna Craig - September 2026 Confession time: I picked this one up because I, too, am the kind of person who would name a cat after Mr. Bingley. So when I met Elle a grad student whose entire dissertation, reading life, and general worldview orbit Jane Austen  I felt instantly, embarrassingly seen. Elle's world is a cozy, familiar one. She's deep in her research on Pride and Prejudice, her cat Bing Bong (no relation to the sweet elephant from Inside Out ,  though I did have to do a double take) is curled up nearby, and Austen is basically the sun her whole life orbits. Then, one late night in the university archives, working on the AUSTEN-C database, a geomagnetic storm rips through the sky. Flash. Bang. And Elle wakes up in a world where Jane Austen never existed at all. This is where the book really won me over. It's not just "no Austen" as a throwaway premise Susanna Craig actually follows the ripple effects. No Hallmark Chan...

Review: The Love Code - Susannah Nix

Review: The Love Code - Book #1 Chemistry Lessons Series - Susannah Nix - June 2017 As a reader who identifies as a bit geeky and quirky, I love the fact that STEM romances are becoming a big fan and that it is showing as well that straight people can be awkward, quirky, geeky, and nerdy. As I recall when I attended RT2017 one of the panels I wanted to listen to was Geeks in Literature. I turned up to the panel and all panelists were queer writers and their characters also queer. This part I didn't mind too much but I did find that often in literature back then all the characters that were nerdy, geeky, and quirky were asexual or part of the LGBTQA+ community and I was neither. Hell, even my own Dad thought I was a lesbian because I wasn't out there partying, doing drugs, and dating. Then STEM romance arrived and I finally was among characters that I could relate to. Those females who are a bit bigger than your average model archetype, girls who have glasses and a brain. In The...

Review: Love Theoretically - Ali Hazelwood ( Book#3)

Review: Love Theoretically - Book #3 Love Hypothesis Series - Ali Hazelwood - June 2023 Something that readers of my reviews will know is that I love quirky and geeky characters as I feel often I can relate to them. I might not be as academic as they are but I can be just as dense or awkward. I have loved this series and I do feel that as each book came along, they just got better and better. In Love, Theoretically, it's the world of Theoretical Physicists versus Experimental Physicists with Elsie and Jack. To help pay her way through graduate school, she joined a fake dating site where she pretended to be a fake girlfriend, and one of her clients was Greg Smith. She meets Greg's family and his awful brother who she feels is always judging her. The next thing she knows in her personal life is she is up for a dream job at MIT and one of the guys though is her nemesis who discredited her mentor Jonathon Turner-Smith but turns out Elsie knows Jonathon as Jack and he knows Elsie...

Review: A Quantum Love Story - Mike Chen

Review: A Quantum Love Story - Mike Chen - January 2024 You know how some days, you try half a dozen books and nothing clicks, and then you will finally find a book that clicks with you and you can read it in one sitting? That was how it was with Mike Chen's A Quantum Love Story. This book had initially caught my attention with the STEM aspect though I may not be that way orientated, I do find STEM novels great and enjoyable. The other thing that surprised me was that it was written by a male author as normally I have found the men tend to stick with writing adventure or thriller novels. A Quantum Love Story had a Groundhog Day mixed with a Back to the Future sort of vibe going on. We first meet Carter who works in the mechanical side of the particle accelerator - Big Bang Theory Vibes right as I could imagine this like the Hadron Collider. Carter knows that the Particle Accelerator is going to blow up at lunchtime every day and has relived this death multiple times. One day he cha...

Review: Bound to Happen - Jonathon Shannon

Image
Review: Bound to Happen - Jonathon Shannon - August 2023 This book caught my attention with the whole idea of missed connections and soulmates and then the geeky storyline of our main characters. But wowza this was such an amazing read and if you ever had any doubts that guys cannot write romance, then you need to stop what you are doing and read Bound to Happen as this is a testament to guys being able to write romantic love stories but not soppy ones. This hit all the right spots for me, especially in the fact that it is a slow-burn romance right up to the very last page normally I cannot stand slow-burn romances as they seem to drag on and on but this one just worked perfectly and it needed to be a slow burn for the story to play out. The book starts with Sophie who is a astrophysicist like Raj from the Big Bang Theory and dreams of working for NASA as she's all about space and string theory. Her thesis is about space debris. Sophie has dedicated her life to ac...
