Review : Abby's Journey - Steena Holmes
There’s something incredibly special about returning to a story years later and finding that it still holds your heart just as gently as before. That’s exactly how I felt picking up Abby's Journey by Steena Holmes , almost a decade after I first read Saving Abby back in 2018.
From the moment I began, it felt like coming home.
This time, we follow Abby once the fragile baby about to be born in the first book now twenty years old and finally stepping into life with a clean bill of health after years of illness. Knowing her history made her journey all the more emotional. There’s a quiet triumph in watching her embrace a future that once felt so uncertain.
What truly warmed my heart was the trip she takes with her grandmother, Millie. Originally planned for Millie and Abby’s mother, Claire, this journey becomes something deeper ,a bridge between past and present. Through shared memories and long-held secrets, Abby begins to understand her mother not just as someone she lost, but as a woman who lived, struggled, and made heartbreaking choices.
Learning about Claire’s time in London, and the painful goodbye she had to say to her son Jackson, added such a poignant layer to the story. It reminded me that people are never just one version of themselves ,they carry whole lifetimes of love, regret, and resilience within them.
At the same time, we see Abby’s father, Josh, quietly wrestling with his own grief. His journey felt just as real and tender. The story beautifully explores that delicate balance between holding on and letting go ,how moving forward doesn’t mean leaving someone behind.
This book wrapped around me like a warm blanket. It made me pause, reflect, and, at times, ache a little. I found myself thinking of my own mother, missing her in that soft, familiar way that sneaks up on you. And alongside that came a gentle longing for travel for those meaningful journeys that aren’t just about places, but about connection, healing, and discovery.
Abby’s Journey is a heartfelt piece of women’s fiction that speaks to love, loss, and the ties that never truly break. For me, it wasn’t just a story, it was an experience, one that lingered long after I turned the final page.
