If you love a twisty psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the very last pages, then The Divorce Lawyer by McGarvey Black might just be your next must-read.

Having previously dipped into McGarvey Black’s work, I went into this one expecting clever twists and I’m happy to report it absolutely delivered. From the very beginning, The Divorce Lawyer gave me strong Strangers on a Train vibes, with that delicious sense of unease where everyone could be hiding something… and anyone could be guilty.

The story centres around Ollie Spalding, a top divorce lawyer who finds himself at the centre of a shocking explosion that costs him his life. And honestly? If you’re going to pick a profession that makes enemies, divorce law has to be right up there. Ollie leaves behind a trail of bitter ex-husbands and ex-wives, each with their own motives, grudges, and secrets. It’s the kind of setup that had me rubbing my hands together, ready for a good old-fashioned whodunnit.

What I really enjoyed was how the story kept me guessing. I love trying to piece things together as I read, and I’ll admit ,I was half right about the killer. But then came that twist near the end… and oh, what a satisfying surprise it was! That’s always my benchmark for a truly great thriller: when an author can outsmart me in the best possible way. McGarvey Black definitely nailed that here.

That said, I did find that at times the story felt a little crowded. There were quite a few characters introduced ,some clearly there to throw us off the scent and while I appreciate a good red herring, a few of them didn’t quite lead anywhere. It occasionally made the plot feel a bit busier than necessary, and I found myself momentarily losing track.

Overall, though, The Divorce Lawyer is a compelling, twist-filled read that will appeal to fans of psychological thrillers and murder mysteries. It’s packed with intrigue, layered characters, and that all-important element of surprise that keeps you turning the pages late into the night.

If you’re after a gripping, suspenseful read with plenty of suspects and a twist you won’t fully see coming, then this is definitely one to add to your TBR pile.
