VBT# Review: The Other Killer - Heidi Field

Review: The Other Killer - Book #3 The Peasedale Woods Killer Series - Heidi Field - April 2026
There’s something quietly powerful about a story of second chances, and The Other Killer by Heidi Field delivers exactly that with a strong emotional core that lingers long after the final page.
Set twenty years after the events of Book #2, we meet Mason as he is released from prison for crimes he was involved in as a teenager alongside Gunner. Having only read the previous book, I can honestly say this one still stands strong on its own. Heidi Field does a great job of grounding the reader, allowing you to slip into Mason’s world without feeling lost or overwhelmed by backstory.
What unfolds is a deeply human story. Mason is trying , really trying to rebuild his life. He forms connections with Gunner’s daughter and grandson, Pip, and even takes young Kenny, the kid across the road, under his wing. Watching him attempt to carve out something meaningful for himself, including securing a stable job, makes you root for him from the beginning. You want him to succeed. You want him to be more than his past.
But of course, the past doesn’t stay buried forever.
As tensions rise and old shadows begin to creep back in, Mason’s fragile new life is put at risk. The outside world isn’t always ready to forgive, and that’s where the emotional weight of this story really hits. I found myself genuinely feeling for Mason especially as he once again loses everything, all in the name of love, echoing the tragedy of his earlier life.
One of the standout elements for me was Mason’s relationship with his mother. In a genre where family ties are often fractured or toxic, this was refreshingly different. Her unwavering love and support, even through his twenty years in prison, added such a heartfelt layer to the story. She never turned her back on him, and that kind of unconditional love brought warmth and depth to what could otherwise be a dark narrative.
Overall, The Other Killer is more than just a thriller ,it’s a story about redemption, resilience, and the enduring power of love. It’s raw, emotional, and incredibly human. If you enjoy character-driven thrillers with heart, this is definitely one to add to your list.
