There are certain themes that will always pull me straight off the shelf, and this book had two of them: a secret sibling, and DNA testing. I'm a sucker for both, but the second one hits especially close to home. A few years ago, I did my own DNA test on a whim, never expecting it to lead anywhere. It ended up leading me to my dad's family , people we had no idea existed, uncovered after 65 years of not knowing. One test, a lot of late-night rabbit-hole searching, and suddenly a whole branch of family history opened up that had been hiding in plain sight all along. So when a novel promises a knock on the door and a DNA result that turns a family upside down, I'm already sitting down with a cup of tea, ready to be pulled in.

That's exactly how The Half Sister opens. Kate and Lauren have their Sunday lunch ritual down to a comforting art , a tradition that's meant even more since losing their dad. It's the kind of routine that feels safe, familiar, unshakeable. And then there's a knock at the door. A young woman named Jess is standing there with a DNA test result in hand, claiming to be their half sister. Just like that, the ground shifts beneath them.

What I loved most about this book is how honestly it captures something I've come to believe firsthand: no family is as tidy as it looks from the outside. We all like to think our little unit is the exception,  that our secrets are small, manageable, containable. But secrets have a way of surfacing eventually, no matter how carefully they've been buried or how many years have passed. Jones builds that slow unravelling beautifully, peeling back each sister's version of events until you're not quite sure who to trust, or whose "perfect" family this really was to begin with.

It's not a perfect book ,some of the twists lean a little soap-opera by the end but the emotional core rang true for me in a way that few domestic dramas manage. If you've ever spat in a tube and waited nervously for results that could change everything, or if you just love a story where the past refuses to stay buried, this one is worth curling up with.
