Review: The One and Only Ivan - Katherine Applegate

Review: The One and Only Ivan - Katherine Applegate - January 2012

Part of my job at the library working as a Children's and Teens Librarian, is that I have to recommend books to all sorts of children and so that we can push ourselves out of our comfort zones we have to read a book that we wouldn't normally read. For me, I have never really been a fan of animal stories but I had read an article about this book as it recently won the Newberry award in America . So I decided to read The One and Only Ivan , the book itself is told through the perspective of the Gorilla named Ivan who since he was a baby has lived at the Big Top Mall and is almost like a human as he knows how to paint etc. The story starts when he befriends an elephant named Ruby who is a new addition to the Circus but Ivan does not believe that Ruby should have to stay here and so he helps to campaign and draw attention to the animals and eventually the animals are taken away - some to the wild and others to a Zoo. This book is written in poetry verse type chapters and is a bit of a slow paced read and fans of Animal stories will love it. The book is based on a true story and tells the story themes of friendship, bravery and the fight for freedom from animal cruelty. It is also written on a yellowed paper which helps dyslexic people read better.
This book is aimed at children aged 8+ who will be able to recognise the themes of the story.
