Review: Promises We Meant to Keep - Monica Murphy

Review: Promises We Meant to Keep - Book #3 Lancaster Prep Series - Monica Murphy - September 2022

My Lancaster Prep journey continues with Promises We Meant to Keep, the third book in the series, which delves into Sylvie Lancaster’s long-awaited love story with Spencer Donato. From their flirtatious beginnings at Lancaster Prep to a heartbreaking separation, Sylvie and Spencer’s journey is one of passion, betrayal, and second chances.

Sylvie Lancaster has always lived under the suffocating control of her mother. Despite her prestigious family name and privileged upbringing, she has never truly been free. Years ago, she shared an intense and unforgettable romance with Spencer Donato, a love she was forced to abandon when she was thrust into an arranged marriage with an older man. Now widowed, Sylvie finally has the opportunity to reclaim her life and pursue the happiness that was once stolen from her. But will she be strong enough to stand on her own, or will she once again fall prey to her mother’s manipulations?

Spencer Donato, once Sylvie’s greatest love, has never truly moved on from their past. Their chance encounter at a wedding reignites old feelings, but the wounds of betrayal still linger. Can he trust her again, or will the past prove too painful to overcome? Their reunion is fraught with tension, longing, and the inevitable question—can love truly conquer all?

However, my biggest struggle with this book was Sylvie herself. Out of all the Lancaster family members, she has been my least favorite due to her weak-minded nature when it comes to her mother. It’s frustrating to watch her continuously fall back into her mother’s clutches, despite the opportunity to break free. That said, her journey towards independence and self-discovery adds an important layer to the story.

Overall, Promises We Meant to Keep is a gripping second-chance romance filled with heartache, healing, and undeniable chemistry. While Sylvie’s character may be frustrating at times, her journey is still worth following. I’m excited to continue exploring the Lancaster Prep world and see where the next book takes me!
