There's a particular kind of comfort in opening a Lumberjanes book it's the comic equivalent of walking into your childhood bedroom and finding everything exactly where you left it, except somehow even more delightful than you remembered. Volume 5 (collecting issues #49–60) is no exception, and honestly, it might be one of my favorite helpings of camp chaos yet.
April, Jo, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are back, and as always, the world refuses to let them have a normal week. Between navigating underground labyrinths, getting swept up in a board game with actual magical stakes, and accidentally waking up an ancient Greek goddess (you know, typical Tuesday stuff), this volume packs in enough adventure for three ordinary book series. And yet nothing ever feels rushed or overstuffed , it all unfolds with that easy, breathless energy the series has perfected, where the absurd and the heartfelt sit side by side without missing a beat.
What I love most, and what keeps pulling me back to this series book after book, is how these stories are never really about the labyrinths or the goddesses. They're about the girls. Every wild scenario is just scaffolding for these six friends to show up for each other, again and again, without hesitation.
There's a birthday bash in this volume that had me grinning the whole way through not because of any grand magical twist, but because it's just so purely, warmly about celebrating someone you love. That's the heart of Lumberjanes in a nutshell: even at its most fantastical, it's really a story about friendship, and it wears that heart proudly on its sleeve.
The humor lands just as well as ever sharp, silly, and never mean-spirited and the art continues to do so much heavy lifting for the emotional beats, with expressive faces and dynamic paneling that make every scrape and shenanigan feel alive on the page. The bonus content is a treat too; the behind-the-scenes extras and expanded cover gallery feel like a little scrapbook tucked in at the end, a sweet reminder of just how many hands and hearts have shaped this world over the years.
If you've been following the Roanoke cabin all along, this volume feels like coming home. And if you haven't yet well, there's no better time to pull up a log by the campfire and join them.
