There's something delightfully unsettling about curling up on your own sofa, tea in hand, reading a thriller about a house swap gone catastrophically wrong. I'll admit, I've had the same daydream as everyone else,  swapping keys with a lovely couple in Cornwall or the Cotswolds, waking up somewhere new, pretending for a week that our lives are a little more glamorous than they are. And then, being the thriller addict I am, that fantasy always curdles into the same nagging thought: but what if they're weird? What if they go through my drawers? A.A. Chaudhuri clearly had the exact same intrusive thought, except she actually did something with it  she wrote this brilliantly twisty, deliciously paranoid book.

The setup pulled me in immediately. A couple, marking their tenth wedding anniversary, swap homes for a week  partly for a change of scenery, partly to paper over cracks in a marriage already strained by something our narrator is struggling to forgive. That's such a clever, human touch: this isn't just an unlucky couple stumbling into danger, it's two people already carrying secrets into a house full of someone else's. The line "we swap homes... but they are hiding a terrible secret, and so am I" had me hooked before chapter one even started.

A.A Chaudhuri is so good at the slow creep of wrongness  the cold water, the flickering lights, that prickling sense of being watched in a house that isn't yours. It's the kind of detail that makes your own home feel suddenly less safe once the lights are off and you're still reading at midnight (guilty). And then the knock at the door , the desperate stranger let in from the cold is one of those moments where you want to shout at the page, "don't do it!", even as you completely understand why she would.

What I loved most, curled up with this one over a few cosy evenings, is how personal it all feels. It's not just a plot machine; it's about trust, marriage, and how well we really know the people and the houses we let ourselves into.

A properly cosy-turned-creepy read. Perfect for anyone who's ever eyed up a house swap and thought, just for a second, what could possibly go wrong ?
