VBT# - Outcast Sister - James Davidson
Review: Outcast Sister - James Davidson - October 2023
This book is my first tour with The Book Folks and it was a great read too especially for a self-published debut novel and also a bonus being set in the UK. Normally, I often find books set in the UK to be quite slow-paced especially their thrillers, and even though this one had a bit of that pacing issue, because of the content and the creepiness of the story it didn't seem to reflect the slower pace as much. The book starts with someone known as "The Doctor" waking up in a strange room feeling like he is dying and remembering only one name Eleanor with a line crossed through it. The book then jumps to Eleanor Rose who is a police officer in London when she gets some strange notes and phone calls telling her to run, she then gets an email from an old lover she hasn't spoken to in five years with their code word. Daniel is in trouble and so she hightails it back home to Liverpool, where her half-sister Beth Krush also works as a police officer. Beth is investigating some strange murders that have occurred around Sundial Court and as the book goes along, it looks like they are connected around a psychiatrist -Dr. Raymond Stray. What happens though when Eleanor's incidents start connecting to the murders? Is Eleanor connected somehow or is she part of a bigger conspiracy at play? Outcast Sister was a busy read in some parts, but really showcased police corruption and how the minds of others can be easily manipulated. Outcast Sister was an excellent read and definitely a thriller/ horror that everyone should add to their list, especially if you are looking for a new male UK author to explore if you enjoys the likes of Mark Billingham , Ian Rankin and Ken Bruen.
