Review: Phantom Instinct - Meg Gardiner

Review: Phantom Instinct - Meg Gardiner - June 2014

As a fan of mystery and thrillers , it's actually surprising how hard it is to find one that holds my interest as I love them fast-paced and intriguing. Meg Gardiner is one of those authors where I read her early books and loved and then her next few were a bit blah but her latest three books including Phantom Instinct have been awesome.  In Phantom Instinct , it starts with a punch and a bang , where the main character Harper Flynn is working as a bartender at Xenon - a night club , the music is playing and over the music you can faintly here bang, bang and then screams as the nightclub fills with three shooters and a Molotov Cocktail killing quite a number of people including Harper's boyfriend Drew. Two shooters were identified and the third escaped into the night - the thing is though that no-one is looking for this third shooter as everyone else is convinced that there was only two. That is everyone but Harper Flynn and Deputy Aiden Garrison. The thing is though that after the shooting Aiden developed a disorder called Fregoli Syndrome which is a rare case of face blindness and can't correctly identify people as everyone looks the same. As the novel goes along , Harper's past is revealed and it turns out that all is not what it seems and that her past is the reason that the shooting happened at Xenon and is all connected to her. The novel takes her back to China Lake - her hometown and face to face with her past life. When Meg introduced China Lake, I knew I had read it somewhere before as one of her earlier books was titled China Lake - the stories are not connected though as I did check :).
So if you are on the lookout for a fast-paced mystery which will keep you entranced , then check out Meg Gardiner's new release "Phantom Instinct" as you will not be disappointed.
