Review: The Ballad of Never After - Stephanie Garber

Review: The Ballad of Never After - Book #2 OUABH Series - Stephanie Garber - September 2022

Ever been in one of those months where books that should have taken you a couple of hours to read, have ended up taking days to read? The feeling is not because the book is dumb or boring, but because you just aren't motivated or connecting to the story like you normally should.  The Ballad of Never After by Stephanie Garber started like that as the first couple of days I read it, I only had gotten up to about Chapter 13. Last night though, I managed to get into the book again and I felt like my reading buzz had picked up again which excited me. The book starts with Evangeline Fox's husband Apollo in a coma, and a new long-lost prince ready to take the throne. This long-lost prince of course isn't a real prince but Luc aka Evangeline's first love, Lucius aka Vampire Boy. Then Apollo has a few curses placed on him - a mirror curse which means if he or Evangeline gets hurt - the injuries are delivered to both of them. During this, another stronger curse is placed - The Ballad of the Archer and Fox. Of course, this is Evangeline's favourite story and she hopes for a HEA, however, Jacks is determined to protect her as he knows firsthand how it felt for the original Archer and his Fox and how it didn't end well. The Ballad of Never After has Evangeline on a journey along with Chaos, Jacks, and LaLa to find the stones of Valory to open the Valory Arch. Each of the fates has a reason why they want it open. Chaos to break his curse, Lala to gain her first love back and Jacks to travel back in time to stop his heart from being stabbed. Will Evangeline find the stones to the Valory Arch and will what she finds to be the answer to all or will it just bring more heartbreak? This book started off a 3-star read for me, but those last chapters pushed it to a 4-star as was an OMFG twist and turn I did not see coming. The ending also reignited my excitement for Book #3 and once that's read, I will go back and read the prequel series.
