Review: This Summer Will Be Different - Carley Fortune - May 2024

One of my favorite Canadian authors is Carley Fortune, I love her books as they are based around Summer and the sunshine as well as the love that spans years. They are books that despite the characters not being able to be together, they finally can and they always get their HEA. This Summer will be Different and spans five years between best friends Bridget and Bee. Five years ago when the story begins, the friends headed to Bridget's family house on Prince Edward Island. Bee got there a few days earlier and was given Bridget - three rules and #3 on the list was Do Not Fall in Love with My Brother. While there on her first day, Bee meets a guy named Felix and they have a romantic night together only to discover later that Felix is Wolf - Bridget's brother. Over the next four years, the pair have this on/off relationship as they both decided that Bridget wouldn't be too happy and they both had their own lives to live as Bee had her flower shop that she bought from her Aunt and Felix had his holiday park on Prince Edward Island. Now five years have passed and Bridget is due to get married to Miles - the wedding is in a couple of weeks and then one day - Bee gets a phone call from Bridget to come to Prince Edward Island. She won't talk about the wedding and keeps reminiscing. Has Bridget got cold feet? What has happened between her and Miles? Bee tries to coax anything out of Bridget, but she keeps changing the subject. I have to admit when the reason was revealed, I was disappointed as it felt like this big build-up for a pathetic reason in my mind and it's like why couldn't she be honest with her friend as it wasn't such a huge deal. This summer though if Bridget won't be honest, then is this Bee's and Felix's chance to confess their love for one another and we finally get a HEA for this couple? I also loved as a bonus Anne of Green Gables touch this book as Lucy Maud Montgomery lived on Prince Edward Island and set some of the book in this area. This Summer Will Be Different beautifully captures the magic of love, friendship, and the sun-soaked charm of Prince Edward Island, even if the emotional payoff for some twists falls a bit short.
