Review: Pieces of the Night - Jennifer Hartmann

Review: Pieces of the Night - Jennifer Hartmann - April 2026

There is something rather lovely about settling into a chunky book on a long bus ride home, knowing you have hours of uninterrupted reading ahead of you. Pieces of the Night by Jennifer Hartmann was my Intercity Bus companion on the journey from Hamilton to Tauranga after heading up for the 5SOS concert, and honestly, what better way to spend the trip than getting lost in 600+ pages of angsty New Adult romance?

Jennifer Hartmann is an author who knows how to deliver the angst, the emotions, and those deliciously complicated relationships that have you feeling all the things. If you've read her work before, you'll know she's not afraid to put her characters through the emotional wringer, and this book is another fabulous example of why readers keep coming back for more.

First, though, can we take a moment to appreciate this COVER? Because, much like Dream On, this one had me experiencing a total cover crush. You know those books you want to own simply because they're ridiculously pretty? Yep, this was one of those for me! Thankfully, the story inside gave me plenty of reasons to keep turning those pages, too.

At the heart of the story is a connection that begins on an unexpected night, when a woman finds Chase Rhodes bleeding, broken, and lost. She already has a life and a future mapped out, including a man Alex she's promised forever to. But sometimes life has other plans, doesn't it? What begins as a secret escape beneath the moon, making music together, grows into something neither of them can easily ignore.

Music, heartbreak, longing, and impossible timing weave their way through this story, creating that emotional pull that Jennifer Hartmann does so well. There's something especially beautiful about two broken people finding a little light in one another, even when the circumstances are far from simple. Of course, when feelings become impossible to hide, the consequences aren't always easy, and these characters have plenty to navigate along the way.

I loved having the time to settle into this one on my journey home. There's something comforting about being tucked away with a big book, watching the scenery roll by while the fictional drama unfolds in your hands. It's the sort of reading experience that makes a long trip feel much shorter!

Overall, Pieces of the Night is another angsty, emotionally charged romance from Jennifer Hartmann, with music, messy feelings, and a gorgeous cover to seal the deal. If you enjoy New Adult romance with plenty of heartache and complicated connections, this one deserves a spot on your TBR.
