VBT# The Other Daughter - Heidi Field

VBT# The Other Daughter - Book #4 The Peasdale Woods Killer Series - Heidi Field - October 2026

There are some books you settle into like a favourite armchair, and then there are books that quietly pull the chair out from under you. The Other Daughter is firmly the second kind, and I loved every unsettling minute of it.

This is the final instalment in Heidi Field’s Peasedale Woods Killers series, and what a way to close it. By now, readers will feel they know Shiv. She has spent years trying to put Peasedale behind her, and as the story opens, things finally seem to be softening. Mason Tucker is out of prison, her son Pip is growing into a happy, giggly little boy, and for once the future looks bright. I found myself exhaling alongside her, which of course is exactly what Heidi Field wants, because the moment you relax, Hunter Piper walks in.

The Piper name has always meant tragedy and violence in these parts, and Hunter arrives to claim what he believes is his. He brings with him a daughter nobody knew existed. Jeanie. I won’t say more, but she is a wonderfully chilling creation, and the question of what a daughter inherits beyond a surname sits at the dark heart of this book.

What Heidi Field does so well is root her horror in the homely. Family loyalty, grudges passed down like crockery, the kind of secrets that simmer quietly in every household until someone lifts the lid. When Pip vanishes and the search leads back to the shack in the woods which we all remember from the previous books.

The writing is taut and the tension builds beautifully, but it’s the emotional stakes that really got me. Shiv’s fierce, protective love for her boy gives the whole story its heartbeat, and the exploration of how a monster is made, rather than simply born, lingers long after the final page.

Longtime fans will find the conclusion deeply satisfying, with old wounds reopened and threads tied off with real care. It’s a dark, psychological ride, so perhaps not one for the faint-hearted, but it is a deeply human one too.

I’d recommend reading the earlier books first to feel the full weight of everything, then curling up somewhere cosy, with the lights on, to finish the series.

Thank you to Heidi Field for a thrilling farewell to Peasedale.
