VBT# The Single Father - Jade Lee Wright

Review: The Single Father - Jade Lee Wright - October 2026

Being part of the Zooloos Book Tour family has given me the chance to read some of Jade Lee Wright’s earlier titles, and I’ve enjoyed every one. This latest caught my eye straight away because I have a soft spot for any book with a Nanny or Au Pair at its heart. Funnily enough, I very nearly became a Nanny myself! I was all set to head to Nanny College in Wellington until my Dad hired a career counsellor to talk me out of it. I’ll never know whether I’d have been any good at it, but I do love living vicariously through fictional ones.

Matilda, or Tilly, has just lost Marc, the love of her life, and is trying to find her footing again. She takes a position as a Nanny in the Peak District, an area she and Marc always dreamed of visiting, hoping for a fresh start. There she meets Edward and his two children, Sage and Ryan. Everything goes beautifully at first, until a hike takes a terrifying turn and Tilly is pushed.

She wakes up bandaged and bewildered, to be told a whole year has passed and that she is now engaged to Edward. Tilly swears she only just arrived! How can a year simply vanish? As she hunts for answers, we’re left wondering alongside her: has she truly lost her mind, or is something far more sinister going on? The plot thickens when the police turn up investigating a missing person, the previous Nanny, and we realise Edward seems to have a type, as Tilly looks just like her.

This one gave me serious Jane Eyre vibes, but with a twisted thriller edge. It also reminded me of that Chicago Med episode where Natalie Manning wakes after her accident to find herself engaged to Ian Harding’s character, with no memory of saying yes, and he gaslights her into believing she did. That same creeping unease runs right through these pages, and it had me gripping my cuppa tightly!

Wright has delivered another great psychological thriller, perfect for curling up under a blanket with the lights on. And without giving anything away, the ending absolutely floored me. Lisa, the gas station attendant? I did NOT see that coming. OMG!

If you love a Nanny-in-peril story, a dash of gothic atmosphere, and a twist that leaves you gasping, pop this one on your TBR.
