Review: The Survival Kit - Donna Freitas

What would you save ? What would you pack into your survival kit if you needed one ? How would you cope ?
Review: The Surivival Kit - Donna Freitas - October 2011
The start of this novel actually reminded me alot of the series "The Vampire Diaries" , not any of the supernatural part but of the character Elena Gilbert . At the start of The Vampire Diaries , Elena is grieving the death of her parents like the main character Rose is grieving the death of her mother. Before the death of Elena's parents , she was the popular girl , a cheerleader and dating the Quarterback and then after her parent's death -she left all that behind.  The other book that it reminds me of is Saving June by Hannah Harrington. In Saving June , the main character's sister commits Suicide and the main character following a list of items found when her sister passed away , she goes on a journey of self-exploration. In The Survival Kit , Rose was also on the cheerleading squad and dating Chris -the quarterback of the football team. Then her mother died of Cancer and none of Rose's past feels important anymore. One day while looking through her mother's closet , she finds a note and a brown bag titled "Rose's Survival Kit". In the Kit , Rose finds several items that connect her to her grief and helping her to get through it - I have to say I love books like this as it was like PS I Love You by Cecilia Ahern with the different letters per month.  The Survival Kit follows Rose on a month by month basis , each chapter covering a couple of months and how she puts the items in the Survival Kit to use. We also read as Rose starts to re-find herself and soon finds herself having to make the decision - whether or not, her old life is where she is supposed to be or has she become a totally different person ?
A fun book , that as I was able to relate it to many other stories in bits and pieces , was a nice , gentle and relaxing read. Just what I needed on a Friday.
