Review: Beyond This Story - Edited by Lee Murray and Piper Mejia

Review: Beyond This Story - Edited by Lee Murray and Piper Mejia - January 2014

In 2013, Tauranga Writers members and president Lee Murray and Piper Mejia along with other helpers and volunteers decided to hold a writing competition for Intermediate aged-children and open it up to all of New Zealand. The book collection was called "Beyond this Age" and was to feature short stories of hyper-fiction. For those who don't know Hyper-fiction is stories that are based on actual historical events or moments that have occurred with fictional aspects placed into the tale or written as a fictional based story. The entries varied from tales of New Zealand disasters both historical from the The Tangawai Disaster to the accident which killed the students down the South Island while rafting to other historical moments in New Zealand history from War tales to the earlier hangings in New Zealand to Olympic star Jack London's death. All the stories in this book were amazing and written to a very high standard and it shows that though New Zealand is not really a big publishing world and it is hard to get books published, it has not stopped teens from embracing their writing skills and entering competitions like this one for the chance to be published.
If you are wanting to read a collection of Short Stories and want to help support the teens of New Zealand with their writing endeavors, then check out this amazing collection of hyper-fiction titled "Beyond this Story".
