The sign’s fat black letters proclaimed in Italian and English:
Danger -- Keep Out
By Order of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology.
It was crowned with the official Vatican seal, too. Maybe their pompous crap worked on tourists.
I slung my leather messenger bag across my back and scaled the chain-link fence surrounding the excavation. My feet hit broken cobblestones on the other side with a puff of stone dust. I brushed at my black slacks and shirt. They were the wrong clothes for crashing a closed dig, but I hadn’t confronted an entity yet who didn’t at least pause at the sight of the Roman collar. Most of them pissed their ectoplasmic pants. We had…used to have… a reputation, my brother Xavier and me.
There wasn’t another living person in sight in this obscure corner of Rome on this muggy August evening. Exactly what I wanted.
In the three weeks since Xav died, I’d scoured every ruined cemetery and archaeological dig in Vatican City for his murderer, the demon who forced Xav to eat a bullet. My rage and hate drew the scaly, red-assed bastards out like stray dogs scenting ripe meat. I slammed every one I could find back to Hell. So far none of them had claimed responsibility, but demons lie.
Any other entities wanting to play High Noon with the leftover Kaine got the same treatment.
Simply put, this was The Plan.
I clambered over broken stone which had once been the foundation of this ninth-century church. Tree roots had done more damage to it than a millennium’s weather. Shame. I could see the remains of carvings on some of the smaller pieces of stone. Probably from the columns.
Beneath the sticky breeze I sensed a strong, hidden presence. Last night, I’d sensed it even through the fog of two bottles of grappa—I was pretty sure I’d finished off the second one; things got hazy around midnight. The presence hidden here had hit me like a two-by-four. Good thing the streets in Rome were narrow. I’d needed a wall to keep me vertical. Keep me heading
back to the Friary, too. I had to be sober to challenge something with such strength. As sober as I got these days, anyway.
So. I set my messenger bag on a stable stone and unbuckled the straps. Never mess with a successful ritual. Ask any athlete. My ritual always began by fanning open the bag’s three compartments. I’d arranged the contents to give me easy access to the essentials in case things went south.
Salt. Holy water. Silver-and-cedar flute.
I straightened, got my balance, and closed my eyes. Breathing in a slow, even rhythm, I shut out the world one piece at a time. The sound of the wind faded first. Then the rumble of distant traffic. The smells of gasoline and garbage. The light on my face from the setting sun.
When I didn’t hear my heartbeat or feel my breathing, I reached inside myself. My hands cupped the power visible only to me, Xavier, and any otherworldly creatures in the vicinity. I gathered its pulsing energy which #owed through me like a second bloodstream and flung it outward like I was snapping a tablecloth over a banquet table.
I opened my eyes as a shimmering blanket of blue and white, the colors of shadows on snow, settled over the entire dig.

"[...] a fun occult detective romp that will appeal to fans of John Constantine, Anita Blake and Harry Dresden."- Brian Keene, bestselling author of The Rising
Exorcism is easy. Living with loss is f*cking impossible.
Exorcist Denis Kaine has spent his life fighting demons, but nothing could prepare him for losing his twin brother. When the Vatican declares Xavier's death a suicide, Denis knows better. Something made his brother pull the trigger. He's going to find out the truth, no matter the cost.
Fueled by rage, whiskey, and a reckless disregard for his own survival, Denis scours the dark underbelly of Rome, exorcising every creature that slithers up from Hell to get in his way. But his search takes a dangerous turn when he stumbles upon a Vatican-sealed crypt and accidentally releases something far older, far more powerful than any demon he's ever faced.
She's not a ghost. She's not a demon. But she’s hungry, and she’s not leaving without raiding his fridge.
Now, exiled from the Church and stuck with a thousand year old roommate named Emma, Denis is forced into an uneasy alliance. If he wants to know the truth about Xavier's death, he'll need Emma’s help. Armed with a messenger bag full of holy water and their habit of making bad decisions, they dive into the darkest corners of faith, power, and the Vatican's buried secrets.
And something is watching. Hell isn't the only thing hunting him.
A darkly humorous journey through loss and the search for redemption.
