Review: The Bookworm - Book #1 Jocks and Nerds Collection - Darcy Rose - May 2025

As a self-confessed book lover, I was immediately drawn to The Bookworm, the first installment in Darcy Rose’s Jocks and Nerds Collection. With a title like that, how could any bookish reader resist? I was eager to dive into this quick, edgy new adult erotica — and it did not disappoint.

The story kicks off with an attention-grabbing moment as Talon and Sawyer, two protective jocks, intervene when they witness a man striking a young woman. That woman is Merritt, and unfortunately, the attacker is her own father — an abusive, controlling man who has made Merritt’s life miserable. Talon and Sawyer step in, rescuing her and offering her the safety and peace she’s been denied for so long.

From there, The Bookworm delivers a fast-paced, instalove romance that’s both sweet and steamy. Talon, the jock prince, becomes Merritt’s hero, not just by saving her from her father but by showing her what real care and affection look like. Of course, anyone familiar with books like the Boys of Tommen series or similar family-violence-themed stories knows that abusive fathers rarely go quietly — and Merritt’s father is no exception. His determination to control Merritt creates tension and challenges that she and Talon must face head-on.

Despite the dark themes, this is ultimately a hopeful and heartwarming read about breaking free from toxic family ties and finding love where you least expect it. The chemistry between Merritt and Talon is palpable, and the fast-moving romance will appeal to readers who enjoy the instalove trope.

I appreciated that the book set up anticipation for the next installment, The Band Geek, where Sawyer will (hopefully) get his own happily ever after with a fellow geek. Fans of new adult romance, especially those who like a mix of sweetness, spice, and protective jocks, will want to keep an eye on this series.
