VBT# Room 21 - Jessica Huntley

Review: Room 21 - Jessica Huntley - May 2025
There was something about Room 21 that instantly drew me in — maybe it was the striking cover, or the intriguing synopsis, but I had high hopes going in. I’m thrilled to say it didn’t disappoint. This dark, suspenseful thriller had me hooked from the very first page.
We begin by meeting Kimberley, a dedicated and meticulous maid working at a prestigious hotel. Right away, her character felt relatable and grounded. I especially loved the reference to Maid in Manhattan — a personal favourite film of mine — which brought a smile to my face and made me feel more connected to her. Kimberley’s eidetic memory is another unique and captivating trait that made her stand out, especially as someone who also has a strong memory (though not quite on her level!).
The story takes a sharp turn when Kimberley is approached by a mysterious woman and offered a lucrative position at an even more exclusive hotel — The Clifton Hotel. But this is no ordinary place. The hotel caters to a dark, elite clientele made up of some of the world’s worst individuals, and access is by invitation only. The atmosphere becomes increasingly unsettling, and Kimberley is given one chilling rule: do not look behind the door of Room 21.
The narrative then shifts, taking us back twenty years to the heartbreaking story of Emily, a young woman who was raped by Damian Clifton — the hotel's owner — and brought to the hotel against her will because he wanted her baby. Now, decades later, Emily is ready for justice. She has a plan, and Kimberley becomes a vital part of it. The climax is set to unfold during the hotel’s annual party — a night when every single guest is a target.
As tensions rise and the pieces of Emily’s plan come together, Kimberley faces a devastating ultimatum that will test her morals, her courage, and her sense of justice. The final act is filled with nail-biting suspense and emotion, leaving readers questioning what they would do in her shoes.
Room 21 is a chilling, clever, and utterly compelling read. It’s a story of trauma, revenge, and redemption — and it’s executed with both sensitivity and intensity. Jessica Huntley has crafted a gripping tale that blends psychological suspense with a powerful emotional core. I can’t wait to read more from her in the future.
Highly recommended for fans of dark thrillers with morally complex characters and layered storytelling.
