Review: Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez

Review: Yours Truly - Book #2 Part of Your World Series - Abby Jimenez - April 2023

OMG you guys!!! I have FINALLY found a book that broke my reading slump! If you've been following my reviews lately, you know I've been struggling to find a romance that actually makes me FEEL something. After trudging through what felt like a desert of mediocre reads, "Yours Truly" by Abby Jimenez arrived like an oasis of everything I needed!

Let me just say, this book HIT DIFFERENT. Like seriously, I was not prepared for how much it would wreck me in the best possible way. The minute I met Jacob, I literally saw myself in him. That awkward feeling when you're in a crowded room? CHECK. The way he sneaks off to eat by himself in quiet corners because social situations are exhausting? LITERALLY ME. As someone who constantly feels like I'm saying the wrong thing in social settings, watching Jacob navigate these same challenges while still being completely lovable was honestly so validating.

Can we talk about the LETTERS?! My heart actually melted every time Jacob wrote one. There's something so intimate and old-school romantic about a man who puts his feelings down on paper because speaking them aloud is too overwhelming. In this age of texting and DMs, I was totally here for this throwback to meaningful communication.

The hospital setting was absolutely PERFECT for me as someone who binge-watches every medical drama out there. I'm talking serious Grey's Anatomy, Code Black, and Chicago Med addiction levels here!

But let's get to the part that absolutely WRECKED me and made this book so personal. The kidney donation storyline. I'm not even sure I can write about this without getting emotional again.

I need to get personal here for a moment. This storyline hit me right in the heart because I lost my mum to kidney failure when she was only 53. The scenes in the hospital brought back so many memories that I sometimes had to put the book down and just breathe. And currently, my sister (who's only 15 months younger than me) is battling end-stage cancer that originated in both kidneys. Reading about a character willing to donate their kidney to save someone they care about... I can't even describe how deeply that resonated with me.

In fiction, we often see grand romantic gestures that feel theatrical or contrived, but Jacob's decision to be an organ donor felt real and raw and NECESSARY in a way that connected directly to my own life experiences. This wasn't just fiction for me—it was a reflection of the kind of selfless act I wish could save my own sister.

I wish I could adequately express how much I needed this book at this exact moment in my life. When you're going through difficult personal times, finding characters who understand your struggles—even fictional ones—can feel like finding a friend who gets it. Jacob's social anxiety, the medical storylines, the raw emotions of watching someone you love suffer... Abby Jimenez somehow captured all of these experiences with both sensitivity and authenticity.

In a genre often criticized for being fluffy or unrealistic, "Yours Truly" stands as powerful evidence that romance can tackle serious issues while still delivering the emotional satisfaction and hope we readers crave.

If you're stuck in a reading rut like I was, PLEASE pick up this book. It's not just a romance—it's a story about human connection, courage, and what it truly means to give yourself to others, both literally and figuratively. This is undoubtedly Abby Jimenez's best work yet, and a solid 5-star read that I'll be recommending to EVERYONE I know for a long time to come.

So yeah, excuse me while I go pre-order whatever Abby Jimenez is writing next! ❤️
