Review: The Stranger Upstairs - Lisa M. Matlin - September 2023

I recently saw this book on Instagram and it caught my attention as the cover is pretty with the pinks and blues. Also being October when I try and read the odd Spooky read, I figured this one was perfect as what better book to read in October than one with a haunted house? The book starts with Sarah Slade and her husband Joe buying a house in a wealthy area with the hopes of doing it up and selling it. They got the house at an amazingly cheap price, the catch though was it is known as The Murder House as several deaths have occurred there over the years, the most famous one was Susan who was murdered by her husband right in the bedroom where Sarah sleeps. Sarah has her dark secrets though as she is a practicing therapist and bestseller of a self-help book, the thing though is everything about her life including her marriage is a sham. You see Sarah isn't even a Sarah. She is one of those people who can adapt to someone else's personality and life as she pleases. During her time in the house though, someone is getting close to the truth about her real identity and leaving notes about her past. Is it Joe missing with her or does someone else know the dark truth? While Sarah is in the house, she also learns that the owner Amanda before her, disappeared without a trace and that no one wants to talk about her. Did the community drive her out and cause her to go crazy, just as they are doing to Sarah? Find out all this and more in a rollercoaster ride that was filled with lots of hidden truths in various nooks and crannies with a kick-arse cover to boot. A perfect read for the October spooky month.
