Review: Triangles - Ellen Hopkins - October 2011

Growing up , I first discovered Ellen Hopkins's books when I was 14 years old and I loved them as she wrote in an unusual way and she targeted those topics which others had deemed "taboo" , then in the last few years she has started writing for adults which I quite like as it seems that she is moving through the age groups and following me. Ellen Hopkins's writing style is unusual for those who write novels normally as she writes in poetry verse. In Triangles , we meet three women and their families . We have Holly who is married to Jace and has three kids Trace , Mikayla and Brianna , Marissa who is married to Christian and has two kids - Shane and Shelby and Andrea who is a single mother with a daughter called Harley and an ex-husband Steve whom has a new girlfriend Cassandra and her son Chad.  To get the meaning of the word "Triangles" - Holly is best friends with Andrea and Andrea is sisters with Marissa.
Holly feels like she is in a loveless marriage with Jace and needs spicing up, so she goes out and flirts -which she deems acceptable as it never goes further than drinks , what will happen though when she takes it a step further and starts sleeping with a couple of the guys she meets ?
Andrea is a single mother trying to raise her daughter but is also in love with her best friend Holly's husband Jace. What will happen though when one night Jace stops by after a fight with Holly and the two of them end up sleeping together ?
Marissa has seemed to have been dealt a bad hand in life as her husband is distant and having an affair , her son is gay and her daughter Shelby is dying . What happens though when her life comes crashing around and she discovers she is finally free of her restraints , is this a time to finally be herself and work on what makes her happy or will she realise that sometimes in order to be happy , you have to work harder on a few things ?
Find out in Triangles where each character will come to learn the true meaning of happiness , love , friendship, betrayal and with the upside of forgiveness.
The only downside with Triangles was that it is quite a long book at 500+ pages and at times you can find yourself feeling a little bored with the story and in some parts may find the poetry storyline disjointed but readers , it is one book that if you do persevere you will enjoy and now I am looking forward to reading Tilt - which is the children's story of Mikayla , Harley and Shane.
