(Horror Films) - Putting the Pieces Together to Outwit Jigsaw

Jigsaw Movie Review | Common Sense Media

Putting the Pieces Together to Outwit Jigsaw:

Like most horror franchises, the movies are countless and each one comes up with a new plot and leaves viewers thinking, now how would I outwit Jigsaw and survive the film. The Saw Franchise has released nine films and unfortunately, we all know Hollywood isn’t the greatest for titling their movies so we have Saw 1, Saw 2, etc but the numbers are in roman numerals just to give it a little edge.

In this piece, I will take a look at the whole franchise and present you with 6 ways to outwit Jigsaw and survive the Saw nightmare.

1)      Cheating never prospers:

No matter how beautiful your intern is or your secretary is or that new guy in your workplace, that is not a reason to cheat on your spouse. Divorce them first, if you want to move on as everyone knows that if you have an affair, one of you is more than likely to slip up and get caught. If watching any movies and reading books is anything to go by, unfaithful spouses always get caught, and is sleeping with a young blonde or toyboy worth being killed over and losing your life? Just look at what happened when Dr. Gordon slept with his medical student,

2)       Play your life safe and win the game:

When I talk about your temple, I am talking about our bodies. Look after them and make sure what you are putting into them is healthy and keeping you alive as you never know who might be lurking around the corner they may be dying of a disease and here you are walking around, living your life to the full and pumping your body with heroin. This is exactly what happened as Jigsaw aka John Kramer learned from Dr. Gordon that he had terminal brain cancer and despite living a healthy life, he was staring down the barrel of death whereas Amanda Young – one of Jigsaw’s early victims but later part of the game was waltzing around hooked on heroin after a stint in jail.

3)      Don’t play the Hero:

This one goes without saying as every horror movie and the same with books, I am one of those people who stand there and go JFC run away, go and get help. Don’t run towards the serial killer as hello, they have killed so many people. What makes you think that you might be the one to kill him? Again, this is a quick moment to weigh your options up, if you have nothing to lose and your life doesn’t mean much to you, then by all means chase him but if you want to live another day, then it’s time to embrace that common sense side and run the other way as history dictates you won’t survive if you play the hero card. Remember Detective Steven Sing – he tried to play the hero card and ended up setting off a bunch of shotguns and died in a blaze of bullets in the first Saw and Jigsaw got eight more movies.

4)      Play into the killer’s game and follow the rules and read the instructions carefully:

Again, I know you would love to be currently doing anything but being in this situation as no one likes to be kidnapped by a madman. However, the truth of the situation is it easier and can work in your favor as you are seen like you are playing into the killer’s game by following the rules. This can lead to the vulnerable side of the psychopath being shown as often if they think they have won, their guard lowers slightly and wham bam – this is the moment to strike. The second part is that make sure you read the instructions carefully as we know Jigsaw loved puzzles, he was like the original Escape room creator. In Saw 2, we watched as Jigsaw had said not to use the key to unlock the door and what happens, the key was used and poor Gus took the bullet for Xavier’s rule-breaking. We also saw in this film, that Obi ended up being burned alive in the furnace and if only he had read between the lines, the instructions Jigsaw had given- if would have known to turn off the furnace, saving himself from death.

5)      Don’t become a criminal:

Again a nice and easy rule to follow right? Well, you would think it is but the amount of people that end up committing crimes is such a high number. My advice is don’t choose to go down that path as you may end up robbing the wrong place and injuring the wrong person and their loved one will come for you in full vengeance. That is the way it happened for Cecil in Saw 4 after he helped robbed the clinic where John Kramer’s wife worked. His wife was hit and ended up losing their baby. John was furious and Cecil ended up becoming Jigsaw’s Guinea pig in one of his first traps, where he had to push his face into a bunch of knives, to free himself from the chair. One wrong robbery and you end up in the hands of a serial killer.

6)      There is no “I” in Team:

If you are lucky enough to be captured by a serial killer with a group of friends or if there are more than just you, working together as a team is a way to go as multiple people can always overpower one person. It’s a bit like the saying don’t bring a knife to a gunfight. A group if you work together can always maneuver and overpower one person. This is always one of my pet hates in books and movies, is that the teams always split up and of course, each individual ends up dying.  In Saw 5, there were five original victims and it became a fight for survival and the weakest were chucked under the bus first. If only they had worked as a team – they might have all been able to have survived Jigsaw.
