The Haunting in Connecticut:

Snedeker House – Southington, Connecticut - Atlas Obscura

The Haunting in Connecticut:

Growing up, I have always loved horror movies as it was a way for my dad and I was able to just the two of us bond. We would have father/daughter dates to the movies and watch horror/supernatural movies as my mum was a bit of a wimp when it came to scary movies.

One of those films we watched together in 2009, was The Haunting in Connecticut. The movie was about a family whose son had been suffering from cancer and to help him recover and have a fresh start, they moved into an older Victorian home only to discover that it was haunted and held a just as scary history.

Like most films of this type, they are often based on true events that have happened in history. The Haunting in Connecticut was loosely based on another family that had hired the famous Ed and Lorraine Warren to help them with what they were experiencing.

Fifteen years after the haunting of the Perron Family, another family known as the Snedeker family moved into a house in Southington, Connecticut in 1986. Allen, Carmen, and their four children – one daughter and three girls again thought they had landed in a great house and found their forever home.

Their first instinct that something wasn’t quite right was when Carmen was exploring their home and came across a set of tools that morticians had used in the basement. She later learned that their house had once been used as a funeral home.

Unlike what the Perrons had experienced, the Snedeker’s one-upped them and this was a whole new ballgame with their eldest son having terrifying visions and seeing ghosts. Soon the whole family was experiencing hauntings and hallucinations etc. Carmen and her husband Allen claimed they were raped and sodomized by the demons and occasionally their water would turn into blood and have a strong decaying flesh smell. One of their sons was showing violent tendencies in his personality, this was the son who was recovering from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is represented in the movie as having Cancer.

The family wanting answers and to prove they weren’t cray-cray contacted the famous Ed and Lorraine Warren to help them as they were continuing to become popular in the field of demons and possessions. Of course, when the Warrens turned up, they said the magic word that the house was indeed filled with demonic spirits and launched a massive media case around the Snedeker’s house and what they had been experiencing.

Unlike, the Perrons though – there have always been questions raised about the Snedeker family and whether what they went through was real or just their crazy imaginations and that this was a stunt for their own fifteen minutes of fame.

When a journalist interviewed the family, it came out that their eldest son had been diagnosed with schizophrenia which does relate to violent outbursts, changes in personality, and hallucinations, and to make matters seem more dubious, the Snedekers had an upstairs neighbour that rented part of the house who never experienced any strange occurrences and the stories of each family member over the years changed slightly even in aspects contradicting what they had been recorded to have said on previous occasions.

Despite the disbelief of many, the story though stayed popular as a documentary was released in 2002 and then the movie of course The Haunting in Connecticut in 2009.

One of the reasons behind the disbelief is that since the Snedeker family came onto the scene, no one had ever reported any strange occurrences, and even after they moved out no one has ever experienced what the family is said to have gone through.

This is one of those cases that will forever be considered an urban legend and can cause many family discussions and division as to where you stand on the topic – was it real or did they make it up as remember the 1980s were when Satanism, supernatural, etc was rife and a popular topic in the world.

To conclude, if you are ever in Southington, Connecticut – the house that the Snedeker’s lived in is still standing and you can take a picture from the outside as the house is still used as a private residence.
