Review: Woman of the Year - Darcey Bell

Review: Woman of the Year - Darcey Bell - March 2023

This book had been one that kept jumping out at me and though I hadn't read the book A Simple Favour, I did quite enjoy the psychological twists and turns of the film with Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. Woman of the Year starts by introducing us to Lorelai or as she was once known, Laura Lee. She has an invitation to the Woman of the Year award which is being given to Holly Serpenta. Years ago in college, the two girls were friends until Holly stabbed Lorelai in the back and ruined her life and it all fell apart. Lorelai is determined to make Holly pay and plans to kill her using Walnut Oil. That is until someone gets to Holly first and murders her. The book then jumps back to the girls' college years and how they first both met - fresh-faced and ready to study psychology and become therapists. It talks about the experiments, lab animals, and the affair they both were having with their college professor who in turn used them all as his personal experiment subjects in behaviour, and manipulation. The book also brings to light, the differences between eras and how back then things like the #metoo movement didn't exist and sometimes it was a man's world, and females if you complained you could be made to look crazy, insane, or sensitive. With the book being heavy on the past/present timeline - it does open your eyes to what the world was like in the 70s/80s and even 90's to now. Sometimes, I do wonder though if we are doing the right thing to shine a light on the #metoo movement or whether it has in the long run causing more damage towards the female sex than good in the minor aspects. As I love psychology and reading about it and the different theorists, I found I enjoyed this book more so than if I hadn't liked those topics.  If you are looking for a psychological thriller with aspects of psychology, sociology, and anthropology - then Woman of the Year by Darcey Bell is the read for you.
