VBT# The Pretender - Katie Ward
Review: The Pretender - Katie Ward - August 2018
One of my
favorite tropes to read about is strangers
that are identical in looks, doppelganger type tales. The Pretender by Katie
Ward is a modern version starring two females of Mark Twain's The Prince and
the Pauper. Growing up Sophia had the same birthday as Princess Isabella, they also looked like they could be
identical twins. Sophia grew up in a horrible house where her parents were
druggies and abused her mostly; they
hated her whereas Isabella grew up in her castle. Sophia went away to boarding
school when she was seven and now at eighteen has returned home, only to have things be just as bad and this time when Sophia
stands up for herself, her father kicks her out. Sophia ends up outside the
palace gates just as Isabella is arguing
with her father. The two spot their likeness, and
on a whim, they decide to switch places just for a week so Isabella can have a
taste of freedom. During the swap, Isabella ends up in Paris with Sophia's
sister Mirabelle and Sophia lives in the palace. What will happen though when
they both fall in love and start enjoying their lives?
Will they want to switch when the time comes?
What will happen when they try to reveal they're
true selves, will others believe them?
Find out in this modern version of Mark Twain's tale - The Pretender by Katie
Ward.
