Review: Mother's Instinct - Barbara Abel

Review: Mother's Instinct - Barbara Abel - Reprinted 2023

Imagine you and your next-door neighbors become the best of friends, so much that you practically live at each other's houses and then you end up getting pregnant at the same time and both have boys who become like brothers and they both have names starting with "M" - Max and Milo. The boys grow up and are inseparable, that is until tragedy happens and one of those boys ends up dying. One family grieves, while the other tries to protect their son and then eventually the parent with the child starts to get paranoid that something might happen to her son, as you know a "Mother's Instinct" is strong. Mother's Instinct was a twisted read that the ending blew me away as I didn't see that coming. Upon more research after finishing the book, I saw that it had been made into a Belgium movie and it's also being made into a US movie starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. Reading the book, I could imagine which actress would play each character as you could see them in that role. I believe if you are a mother then this book might hit a nerve for you but it also shows how powerful grief can be to someone, especially when they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I am now looking forward to the film and seeing how the book translates onto the screen.  If you love domestic thrillers like Big Little Lies, Hold My Girl by Charlene Carr, or The Whispers by Ashley Audrain with a hint of A Simple Favour then you will love Mother's Instinct by Barbara Abel.
