Review: The House in the Pines - Ana Reyes - January 2023

I was in the mood for a thriller last night and clicked on The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes, the book starts with us meeting Maya. She lives with her fiance Dan and is suffering from insomnia as she has run out of drugs and currently going through withdrawal. She became hooked seven years ago she watched her best friend be murdered by Frank Bellamy and no one believed her, they just imagined she was crazy and taken to therapy. Now seven years later, she watches a video on YouTube that has gone viral. It is about a girl dropping dead in a diner, Maya can't believe what she has seen. The girl is sitting opposite Frank Bellamy. This is the second time someone has dropped dead in his presence. Maya can't let him get away with it again, so she heads back home to confront him and then find the evidence to persecute him for Crisitina's death. As Maya returns home, she starts to have flashbacks of when she first met Frank and the lead-up to Aubrey's death. As the book goes along, we learn more about Frank and his upbringing and soon some of Maya's memories aren't lining up with what happened. Is Frank responsible for Maya's mind gaps and the deaths? Can she find proof and does it all lead back to the House in the Pines? Find out in this mind-bending psychological thriller, that was also chosen for Reese's BookClub.
