Andy Griffith Quote: “Who is going to believe a con artist? Everyone, if she is good.”

Review: Cover Story - Susan Rigetti - April 2022

As we watched in films like Catch Me If You Can to the documentary Inventing Anna, being a con artist is all about confidence and making sure that you don't falter and get your identity if you have multiple mixed up. The number one key as I said is confidence if you exude that then people will never think to question you.  In Cover Story, we first meet Lora who has just been given the amazing opportunity to become an intern at Elle Magazine. While at Elle Magazine, she meets Cat Wolff one of the editors and someone who exuded confidence. Cat Wolff as we learn is a con woman and has multiple identities and the FBI are closing in on her, but of course, she's been doing this for years and is always a few steps ahead of them. Cat decides to take an intern under her wing aka Lora and once the intern finishes, offers Lora, a job writing a book with her as she has "connections". Lora with no paid job and no home moves in with Cat and the pair gets very chummy together. However, things seem weird for Lora and the pair have a fight and then Cat's true identity is getting closer to being revealed as she doesn't realize that the FBI is right around the corner waiting for her to slip up. This was such an intriguing read and I have to admit even the ending left me blown away as you start to reconsider everything that you read in the second half of the novel and try to connect the dots. This book was an amazing read and insight into the world of a skilled con woman and as someone who loves true crime, it was right up my alley.  This book is perfect for fans of Catch Me If You Can, Inventing Anna, and The Talented Mr. Ripley with a touch of The Devil Wears Prada and any films that feature the Fashion World and Interns.
