A Cold Dark Place

Synopsis : A Cold Dark Place - HD Hatcher - August 2010

One Too Many (a short) About A Cold Dark Place:

On a chance meeting, (at a mutual friend's house) Luke finds the love of his life. Andy is what Luke has been longing for all of his adult years: the perfect man. But, this perfect man is not only straight-he is married to a woman who is more devilish than Satan himself. In a bittersweet journey that will change his life forever, Luke must reach deep inside and find the strength he never knew existed. A Cold Dark Place is the story of a man who must pick up the pieces of his broken heart after a lifetime of heartbreak and betrayal.

Interview With the Author : HD Hatcher :

Have you ever gone through any of the experiences shared in A Cold Dark Place?

Thankfully not. How many of us can say that we have never loved someone that did not love us in the same way that we loved them? Not many of us. Without giving away the entire plot of the story, there is a scene in which Luke is so overwhelmed with heartache, that he collapses and is found a short while later.
If this were my story, I would still be lying on the floor. (Joke)
There was a time or two when a broken heart had me wanting to fall asleep and not awaken until it was all over. It never happened for me, so I bestowed the honor to one of the character in my book.

Why is the antagonist in your book a woman?

In the gay world, the biggest obstacle to true love is the wife or girlfriend of the man that is destined to be ours; just kidding. However, in all seriousness, if the antagonist were a man, then the storyline would be too predictable. I didn’t want to write a story where the unhappy gay guy meets another unhappy gay guy in an abusive relationship, they fall in love and they live happily ever after.
For a gay guy (or a straight woman for that matter) to fall in love with a married man is not uncommon. It all boils down to wanting something that we can’t have. Nine chances out of ten, if a man is married to a woman, it is because he loves her. I wouldn’t even say that the woman is the villain of the story. Veronica is the embodiment of everything that stands in the way of Luke’s happy ending.

What is your favorite scene in A Cold Dark Place?

My favorite scene in A Cold Dark Place is the bathtub scene. It’s sweet, endearing, and I have no idea where it came from. When reading back over it, I found myself asking, “Where did that come from?” It is very spiritual and shows the reader just how strong the love is between Luke and Andy.
This is the place in the story where the reader will realize that the love these two share transcends what love is perceived to be.
This scene can’t be taken for face value. This entire scene is about washing away the hurt from the past so that the healing process can begin to take place.

Is there another book in the publishing pipeline?

Yes there is. Closet Queen will be out before the summer of 2011. Unlike A Cold Dark Place, Closet Queen is a nonfiction piece that has a happy ending.
Thank you for allowing me to take up so much of your time. I hope that we can do this again soon.
