Review: Survive the Night - Riley Sager - June 2021

Charlie is headed home to her grandmothers as her university days, for now, is over as she is riddled with guilt as her best friend and roommate Maddy was murdered and Charlie believes it is all her fault since she left her alone after they argued one night after clubbing. Looking at the rideshare board, hoping she can leave a bit early and save the money. She meets Josh who she learns is leaving early as his dad has had a stroke. Even though the two are strangers, Charlie realizes he can't be that bad, or can he? The drive back starts innocently but soon things are taking a strange turn and since Charlie has suffered movie hallucinations, she can't trust herself what is true or fantasy but part of her is certain that Josh is lying about who he is and things aren't adding up he is acting like he might be the Campus Killer - the guy who killed her best friend Maddy. Is he afraid that Charlie saw him and can identify him and now wants her dead too, or is something more sinister up his sleeve as the night takes a very twisted turn? I have to admit, I did not see this twist coming, and then when the killer was revealed, that too blew me away. This was the first time I have read a Riley Sager and with all his crazy twists and turns, it was a rollercoaster ride as it also touched on the issues of how mental health and grief can affect different people. I am now looking forward to reading more from this author.
