Review: Beau and Bett - Kathryn Berla
Review: Beau and Bett - Kathryn Berla - June 2019
One of my favorite tropes to read are
renditions of fairytales and one of my all-time favorite fairytales happens to
be the story of Beauty and the Beast. So when I saw Beau and Bett was to be a
retelling of Beauty and the Beast, I knew I had to read it. The book starts off
with a twist where Beau is our "beauty". He comes from a lovely
family, where though they may not have a lot and are on hard times - the love
they have for each other is strong and keeps them united. The Beast in this
book is Bett aka Bettina. She is the ice queen and at school is known as being
rude and mean and she is nicknamed Bett the Beast. The book starts off
with Beau's mum stopping and picking an avocado from the ranch that Bett's
family owns and then backing out, Beau's mother crashes into Bett's car. With
the families insurance lapsed as they couldn't afford it, Beau stands up and
goes to the ranch to see if he can work off the cost that his family
owes. Bett's father and grandmother agree and so Beau starts working odd
jobs on the ranch. As he does this he starts to build a relationship with Bett
and see her in a different light, he discovers that she is different from what
others perceive her to be and in fact she is lonely. Can Beau the beauty
tame Bett the beast and the pair strike off a potential YA romance? Find out in
Beau and Bett by Kathryn Berla. A modern take on Beauty and the Beast.
