The Darkness Within

Review: The Darkness Within - Taylor K. Scott - May 2021

This book starts with 15-year-old Amelia being woken up by two policemen at the door asking for her brother Grant Thomas. Grant has been accused of rape. The thing though is that the girl Samantha has been his girlfriend for the past two years and he would never do a thing like this ever or would he? The book then jumps two years and Grant is two years into an Eight-year sentence and Amelia's life has been made a living hell from Samantha's brother Bowie Phillips. Bowie has been the bane of Amelia's existence even before this happens as Bowie loved to bully and tease Amelia and now that this has happened, he is more motivated to punish her for what her brother did to his sister. During the book, Amelia also has a friend named Matt who is "the boy next door" and friends with Bowie. During the Darkness Within, we watch this weird love triangle dynamic going on between Matt, Amelia, and Bowie and eventually things start to get a bit odd and possessive with Matt which will cause her to take a look at the night Grant was accused and will she like what she finds or will it horrify her when she has to choose to either save her brother or someone close to her? We also watch as Bowie's and Amelia's banter turns from Hate to Love in this Bullymance enemies to lovers’ romance.  Except for a few trigger scenes, this book overall was quite clean considering the content and the topic of the story.  If you love a tiny bit of edge to your stories but are in the mood for a YA read then check out The Darkness Within by Taylor K Scott.
