Review: Given A Buckley's Chance - Nikki Perry and Kirsty Roby - October 2023

Earlier this year, I read The Missing Wife/Life by this New Zealand duo of sisters and enjoyed the book as it took us on a road trip from Wellington to down the South Island.  I was contacted by the pair to read their latest one Given A Buckley's Chance which takes us across the ditch to another land down under - Australia. In Given A Buckley's Chance, we meet the Buckley family who haven't been back to the family farm as a group in years, and now with one of their cousins turning 40, Stephen has decided to make it a fun birthday and reignite the family's annual scavenger hunt and rules and the winner gets $100K. Each of the cousins is in, if not for the family fun but the money as it could help them all in one way or another. The tour bus will be driven by Linc - someone who Keri Buckley almost had a one-night stand with and killed his cockatoo -hence the dead bird on the cover. We also meet a "fake cousin" Eddie whose real identity will be revealed later in the book the reason behind faking the adventure and also mysteries and family secrets will be revealed including what happened that night Stephen lost his toe when he was bitten by a snake and locked in the shed during a game of hide and seek. I also googled the title as it came up with a piece of Australian Slang and Given A Buckley's Chance means one chance in a million or no chance at all. After reading this book, I want to go to Australia now and do a cross-country bus tour as I haven't yet experienced Australia and what it has to offer as I've only at this stage done a three-day stopover in Melbourne.  This chick-lit read is a great read for those wanting a taste of life down under and might also inspire a bit of scavenger hunting in your life.
