They All Fall Down

Review: They All Fall Down - Rachel Howzell Hall - April 2019

One of my favorite mystery tropes has always been the story of strangers being sent under a premise to a private island, mansion. Getting that invitation for something else only to discover that it is, in fact, their worst nightmares and someone knows all their secrets and now over the course of time, they are going to be killed off one by one. It has been a story that has been written over and over again, but each time I have read it I have enjoyed it. In They All Fall Down, a group of strangers have been sent an invitation to a private island off Mexico. They each have secrets that they are covering up, that if they got out to the public would not only ruin them but make them spend the rest of their lives in prison. Each of the strangers was major suspects of crimes but each time their lawyer got them off. Now someone wants them to pay for their crimes and if they aren't careful and follow the instructions they won't be making it off the island alive. I enjoyed the premise behind this book, but have to admit that the main female character annoyed me. I found Miriam to be a whiny middle-aged woman who blamed everyone for her shortcomings, it's like ok, this bad thing happened now get over it. Everyone else has moved on, so you should too. If you like mystery novels, then this was a good read if you can bypass the annoying quirks of each of the characters as this is where I feel the story fell short was with the descriptions and personalities of the characters and their strong imperfections and flaws.
