Review : The Accomplice - Lisa Lutz - January 2022

Years ago, I discovered Lisa Lutz as an author as I fell in love with her series The Spellman Files which featured characters that resembled closely those that you would find in Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Since then, I have kept an eye out on her other releases to give them a read. The Accomplice is Lisa Lutz's latest book and a roller coaster of a past/present ride that spans about twenty years of friendship and closeness for Owen Mann and Luna Grey. The pair started as strangers in college and then became fast friends, you can see hints of possible romantic entanglements but these two never got together which is why their friendship lasted as long as it did as I do find if you get together then the friendship goes two ways - you remain together and eventually marry, etc which is what happened to friends Casey and Mason or you get together and that breaks the friendship apart. Luna and Owen never wanted to risk those odds. The story starts with the present where Owen's wife Irene has just turned up murdered and of course Luna found the body and Owen being the husband - the pair are suspects. This though isn't the first time that Luna and Owen have found or been involved with a dead body as the book flips back to their college days when Owen's hook-up was found dead after threatening to expose a dark secret that Luna Grey was hiding. Throughout the book, we have hints of Luna's past but I have to admit, it wasn't as scandalous as they make it out to be in the book. The book has several other key players like Luna's husband Sam, Owen's brother Griff and Irene's stepfather Leo and then the side players like next-door neighbor Maya Wilton and Owen's side piece Amy. Everyone has something to hide but the truth of the matter is - did they kill Irene to keep their secret and if so, which one is the murderer? This was a slower-paced thriller and does go off on lots of different tangents which are connected but not which made it quite a busy and full-on read. I would say, give it a go but only if you have the time to sit and process everything as you read as you may just miss a crucial piece of the ever-unfolding puzzle.
