Review: In the Ballroom with the Candlestick - Diana Peterfreund

Review: In the Ballroom with a Candlestick - Book #3 Clue Mystery Series - Diana Peterfreund - November 2021

Have you ever been excited about a book as you have loved the previous ones and then the last book falls flat on its face and is a letdown? That is how I felt with In The Ballroom with a Candlestick. I had enjoyed the previous two books but this one just made me hate all the characters, there wasn't a single one I liked. From Oliver Green who still doesn't know technically if he is Oliver as he could be Vaughn - the brother that supposedly died, to Scarlett who has this massive ego about helping everyone but then when she doesn't get her way, she throws a tantrum and takes extreme action, Orchid who killed a man in Book #2 and feels guilt but still acts with a poor me attitude. It's like look you are wealthy and you got away with murder, what's there to be sad about besides of course Vaughn's death? Mustard who is in the closet but acts like he doesn't want anyone to know - it's like -look if they are your friends they will accept you for who you are, Beth - a jealous one whose life was ruined when she was injured in the car crash that killed two people and Plum- hiding his invention and also the fact he is in love with Mustard. We also have a couple more deaths in this book, Mrs White gets bailed from jail and all mayhem breaks loose at the Prom which is told with three alternate endings on how the story could have ended. I felt overall that this book had lost the momentum that we had seen build in the previous two and the deaths of this book's characters were senseless. Although in saying that it was a good YA thriller and one that I would only recommend you read if you have the need and desire to finish the series, but reader you have been forewarned - so the candlestick is now in your corner.
