Tide's Out: Tai Timu — Kete Books

Review: Tide's Out - Tai Timu - Frances Plumpton - November 2022

Growing up in New Zealand, we live in a bilingual society where we are taught often both Māori and English. Tide's Out was a cute read by Frances Plumpton and brought back memories of visiting the beach and estuaries and looking at the rock pools while the tide is out and exploring the uncovered land. Tide's Out is a fun counting book of different things that you can find on your adventures e.g., one sprig of salty seaweed and ten twisty turret shells. Each page also contains not only the English sentence but also the translation in te reo Māori. That way you can practice your te reo and read the story wherever you are whether you are in an English childcare setting or a Kohanga Reo or Kura Kaupapa.
I also really liked the illustrations and the spacing of the words as the book is simple and not over the top crowded and would make the perfect read for children from 3 -9 years old as like most books with Te Reo you can go into a bit further depth depending on the age group you are presenting too.

I have a co-worker who has a great-granddaughter in Alaska, who I am going to give this book to so she can pass on her heritage to her great-granddaughter and allow the family to instil a part of New Zealand culture onto their child as it is part of their children's Kaupapa and family history.
