It's that time again , It's Top Ten Tuesday and Today's is the Top Ten Books that should be on a Teen's Required Reading List.

  1. Jane - April Linder : A 21st Century version of Jane Eyre and one of the best modern day adaptions of Classics and of this tale that I have ever read.
  2. The Hate List by Jennifer Brown - One of the most powerful novels about the aftermath of school shootings.
  3. After by Amy Efaw - A Powerful novel about the consequences of when a fifteen year over-achiever tries to hide her pregnancy.
  4. Shine by Lauren Myracle - An amazing novel that touches on the issue of Homosexuality , the ridicule and abuse and the true meaning of friendship.
  5. Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson - Touches on the issue of Peer pressure, alcohol and drugs from a teen Male's POV.
  6. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson - A story about a shy girl who was raped , this book is very powerful and has also had a lot of controversy last year when a Preacher in America tried to ban it.
  7. Finding Alice by Melody Carlson - One of the best Christian Edgy Content Novels I have read , talks about the topic of Schizophrenia with a teen and relates the story to Alice in Wonderland . Other Series by her which I highly recommend is her Colour Me "True Colours"
  8. Go Ask Alice - Anon ; Though this book was released in the 1970's , it is still such an amazing novel about a teen who dies from a drug overdose and is written in a diary format, it is also one of the longest standing Banned Books and has so much controversy about it .
  9. I Never Promised You a Rose Garden - Joanne Greenburg/Hannah Green - This is one of the most amazing novels I have read about Schizophrenia and it was written in 1964 and it still is powerful today.
  10. Impulse by Ellen Hopkins - About Self-Harm , this is my favourite one by her but I would recommend any by Ellen Hopkins , all the books cover a Edgy Issue and are written in Verse .

  2. I have to say, I never could read GO ASK ALICE. I started it a couple times and ended up flipping through it and then putting it down because it was just too disturbing for me. I think this is part of the problem with choosing ten books that ALL teens should read -- there are such different maturity and interest levels; some kids would be fine with that book whereas even as an adult I don't think I could get through it.

My top 10 list this week.

  3. My high school BFFs and I read Go Ask Alice in the 70's ... amazing novel! I plan on reading Speak ... if a novel is banned or in danger of being banned, I make sure to read it!

  5. Fantastic list. Speak is also on mine. I didn't even think of some of the others you mentioned, but I think they would be good on a required reading list.

Hi, Phantom Paragrapher. =) Your picks make me think of Second Star to the Right by Deborah Hautzig, a novel whose young protagonist has an eating disorder. Have you read it? It was one of the most powerful books I read in high school.
